Variations Too

VToo full

2019 -- 40x22x6"

"Variations Too" is a set of four motorized robotic arms which perform a variety of motions articulated in a single plane. The arms move in response to the presence and distance of viewers. It is a preliminary study for "Variations For", an installation of five industrial robot arms that can teach themselves to dance together -- as opposed to many robots that just fight amongst themselves.

The title is a pun on "Variations IV", John Cage's 1963 aleatoric composition, first recorded in Los Angeles, CA.

VFor will probably never be implemented, therefore VToo may be the last of its kind.

A build log and all the trimmings can be found on my blog:
